Tomatoes in the garage

We chose to try something new with the tomato plants for the upcoming freeze. Instead of covering and uncovering the plants in the garden... We removed the roots and all and hung them upside down in the garage. They are supposed to ripen even if still green this way.

We didn't pull the cherry tomatoes out. If we did most of the tomatoes would probably fall off in handling, and it didn't seem worth while. These are the heirloom large size tomatoes.

It is amazing how heavy these plants are this way!

  1. We learned through this that it does work, BUT it is very important to space the plants out. Where there was little airflow, the tomatoes molded and rotted before they ripened. We lost about half the crop to rot. The tomatoes that were in open air ripened perfectly fine and were quite tasty! So next year if we do this we will hang a single plant by itself and make sure there is plenty of airflow around then.
