New for 2016 - Shipping! Idaho to be the first !

Exciting news! we have decided to focus our new offering of nationwide shipping on ... (drum roll please) IDAHO!

Why Choose Idaho?  well.... I like idaho :)

We welcome citizens of Idaho to join Little Sprouts Farm, and enjoy all the benefits the local southern oregon customers do with only a few exceptions. (there are a few products not available for shipping across state lines).  You will participate in the same membership, online ordering, biweekly delivery, and good food for better health!

Here's how it works:

Become a farm member (either free or paid... your choice) by signing up online
Choose "out of area, ship to" as your delivery preference
Then follow through the signup as if you were local!

You will receive an email reminder a few days before your scheduled delivery.
Go into the online store, order as much or as little as you wish
pay online through paypal or online check OR send in a check for your account
Your order will be packed and shipped vis UPS on the assigned monday
the actual shipping costs will be added to your account
You should receive your order, still frozen, on wednesday or at latest thursday

That's it!

Shipping costs are very low, since we can use UPS ground instead of a faster more expensive option. We have successfully packed for frozen delivery at these low rates. There may be some dry ice left in the package, so please be careful when unpacking!

We are excited to welcome customers from Idaho! We hope to set up personal visits to the main areas of Boise, Twin Falls, and Coeur d'Alene from time to time to meet you in person and answer any questions. We truly want this to be a personal farmer - farm member relationship and are committed to making that happen.

-------------------

In fact! --- we are interested in opening up a farm in one of these areas. Yes.. a second Little Sprouts Farm! This is only the idea phase, but we are looking for investors, land, and business partners towards that end. If you are interested in having a local little sprouts farm or supporting a local one, please contact us!

Mother Earth News Fair

We have spent the weekend at the Mother Earth News Fair and had a wonderful time! What a fabulous event it was.

The overall event was extremely well done, nicely laid out at good facilities, manageable schedule, interesting and valuable content, and applicable exhibitors. Rarely have I described an event like this in such glowing terms in the technical industry. This was truly a pleasant surprise! I strongly encourage you to attend the remaining events if one is anywhere close to you.

Another important aspect of the event's success was the child friendliness of it. We traveled with our four young children (ages 7 months to 8 years) and a conventional "no children allowed" approach would have been detrimental at most trade shows, but not here! The Mother Earth News staff and volunteers were very helpful, accommodating, and kind to children. The schedule included plenty of interesting workshops for the little ones and they were well attended ad well managed. This afforded us the opportunity to keep them happily busy while we took moments to devote our full attention to a workshop or two, or have in depth conversations with exhibitors. The classes were even truly educational for children, not just busy work "color inside the lines".  I applaud Mother Earth News for their forethought in setting this up.

We ran into several people at this fair that we have been in contact with previously, which was also a great aspect. The audience and exhibitors were spot on!

The most encouraging aspect of this event is this... we are not alone! Sometimes in our quest for excellence and the necessary "controversy" that being "different" brings, we forget just how big but yet small the world is. Big because there are plenty of other people following exactly the same path, whichever path you choose. Small because you come across those people so easily. At this event we fit in perfectly! All the "controversial" aspects of our life became the norm, the accepted, the expected. Our intense search for true health was the focus of much of the exhibitors and talks. Our commitment to natural and humane animal treatment plus  organic and sustainable farming practices was shared and taught by everyone present. The books and videos available preached the very message that our life follows, and this blog explains. Even homeschooling was not shunned as the "silly practice of anti socials". Yes, it was a refreshing and helpful break from the bulk of hte conventional world that preaches sameness, conformity, and mediocrity in everything.  We came away thinking that there is more hope for America than we imagined. There is a grassroots effort of people, just like us, who are fighting the unseen battle of conventional thought against true wisdom of time.  Even thought we might not agree on the details of practice, we are all moving in the same direction of reconnecting with our past and reimplementing what made America great.

As we head home, our thoughts and hearts are full of encouragement, information, motivation, and validation.  Was it worth an 8 hour drive with 4 young children? you bet it was! I would do it again in a moment!

Farm School?

We have had many requests to start a west coast "farm school" where those interested in getting started can come for a weekend or a week to learn the basics of sustainable farming and marketing. This definately fits with our long term goal of making what we do reproducible! Our strongest desire is to see hundreds or even tousands of farms launched from our  and other's examples. That is what this country needs, not bigger farms, more farms!

If you are interested, please drop us an email. We are starting to put some ideas together on how this might work and could use some feedback. Perhaps in the near future I will post a survey here so you can answer some basic questions about what you would be interested in.

I see this as a very exciting trend that America is turning back to sensible food production! Competition is NOT a worry, as it would take hundreds of farms in every area just to supply the needs of a medium sized town with wholesome organic local food. I suspect most cities could be surrounded by farms and there is plenty of business to support them all.

So please go ahead and contact us. We dont claim to know everything but what we do know we are more than willing to share. Each farm will have its own model and process, but there are lots of basics that apply to anyone. If nothing else, getting away for a weekend to concentrate on your future farm might be just what you need to get things rolling!

And the winner is....

At the wine and cheese festival we decided to do a giveaway. We announced giving away 1/4 of one of our pastured heritage hogs. After collecting names all day, the time came to pick one!

All the names go into a big box... shale shake shake...

Kaelyn dives in to choose the lucky winner...

And the winner is....
And the winner of the 1/4 share of pastured heritage pork is...

(drum roll please...)

Hannah Hall of Central Point, Oregon

It was our pleasure to speak with you tonight to inform you of the winning pick. Congratulations!

We would like to thank everyone that signed up today, it was great to meet you today!

Southern Oregon Cheese festival is a success!

What a day! The responses we received at the wine and cheese festival today were amazing! For quite a few hours the floor was packed and our booth was hopping! Many people asking questions, signing up for the giveaway of 1/4 of a hog, and browsing the photo album for the farm.  Its very encouraging to see and hear so many people in the area that are looking for a small local organic caring farm to buy food from.

We want to thank each and every person that stopped by the booth today. It was a pleasure speaking with each of you.

A special thanks goes to my 8 yr old son Hunter, who proved himself to be a tremendously motivated salesman! With very little coaching he did an awesome job pulling people in and filling our giveaway jar with names. By the end of the long day Hunter had passed out close to 400 brochures and flyer's! Hunter definitely outshined us all as the superstar of the day!

Hunter, our expert farm salesman, hard at work readying the booth!

Here's the whole crew, all in "Little Sprouts Shirts" and working hard to promote our farm.

Oregon Cheese Festival --- Exciting days!

As you can tell from the string of recent blog posts, life has become quite busy with the arrival of spring. The comparative "lull" of winter is over at the farm and we are getting geared up for our biggest year yet! (well, the first full year in "business").

We are just starting our advertising campaigns also. The first big bash to watch for is our booth at the 7th Annual Oregon Cheese Festival! That's right, we are getting a booth and will be there presenting the farm, and selling product!

The 7th Annual Oregon Cheese Festival is sponsored by the Rogue Valley Creamery in Central Point. It is a one day long festival with wine and cheese makers from all over the country, and plenty of events for all ages. There is also a farmers market style area where we will be. The festival routinely draws over 3000 visitors in a single day!

We will be working diligently on what to bring to the festival, it is in only 2 weeks! Short notice to pull together the biggest even in Little Sprouts history, but exciting and fun nonetheless! We will finally have a chance to meet and greet potential customers and raise awareness to our farm and our views on sustainable food production and health.

If you don't already have plans, come by and see us! We hope to have product for sale, lots of information, and show specials!

Little Sprouts Farm Joins "Thrive" and the online farmers market

We are happy to announce that Little Sprouts Farm has joined the organization Thrive, which promotes local healthy food sources. This organization is working hard to build up the local small farm and assist in managing and marketing farm products, as well as raising community awareness of the differences available to consumers.

A new addition to Thrive is the online farmers market, which allows customers to go online, browse, and place weekly orders for fresh local farm products. It much like visiting a farmers market, but can be done in the comfort of your own home, and in any weather, any time of the year.  There is even an option for home or business delivery of products ordered!

Here are the links:

Online Farmers Market website

Thrive organization

One of the big advantages for us is that we can list the products that we have from week to week, with no obligation other than to deliver what we offer after it is sold. This relieves some of the effort in marketing and sales, allowing us to concentrate for now on getting the farm running smoothly. It seems like a perfect companion to a startup farm operation.

We are also very happy to support the efforts of Thrive in raising awareness of the food choices available today.
